Art Classes for Adults

LUX Center for the Arts offers a variety of classes designed to optimize creativity while encouraging students to have fun. Instructors and artists-in-residence are qualified to teach all ages and skill levels in well-equipped studios.

Start your Saturday morning off at the LUX! This class will introduce beginning students to the fundamentals of the pottery wheel and allow more advanced students time to hone their skills. Try your hand at making your own pottery with clay! This class will cover hand building techniques and introduce students to the pottery wheel. This class takes place in our brand new, state-of-the-art Ceramics Center located in the building just west of the LUX parking lot.

Intro to Pottery Wheel Skills (SCER-02)
Learn to use the potters wheel and make your own pottery! The fundamentals of using the pottery wheel as well as finishing techniques will be covered. This class takes place in our brand new, state-of-the-art Ceramics Center located in the building just west of the LUX parking lot.

Sculptures in Clay (SCER-04)

Learn to build large scale ceramic sculptures. The instructor for this course, Nathan Murray, specializes in building life size figurative sculptures and incorporates casting the human form in plaster to create molds for quickly building clay features. Students are welcome to work figuratively or more abstract as the instructor is primarily a resources in helping students achieve their goals. This class takes place in our brand new, state-of-the-art Ceramics Center located in the building just west of the LUX parking lot.

Beginning Drawing (SPNT-05)

You really can learn to draw! Observational drawing skills will be taught through working on still life, landscape, and portraiture. Graphite, charcoal, and pastels will be used to represent value, line, and texture. This class runs 2.5 hours and allows for more practice time with the instructor present than our Saturday classes allow. All materials provided.

Throwing and Altering (SCER-06)

This is an all-level ceramics class. Learn wheel throwing techniques and practice and improve your skills. Techniques to alter thrown pieces after they have been removed from the wheel will also be covered. Using copper, nickel, and brass you will learn to shape, form and fuse metal! Make your own jewelry and art while learning to create texture with the rolling mill, attach with an oxy acetylene torch, and finish your own unique metal projects.

Oil Painting (SPNT-01)

Come try your hand at oil painting! Projects will address how to use the materials, how to mix pigments, and include lessons on painting from observation. Painting experience is not required, but prior drawing experience is highly recommended. Basic oil painting supplies will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own paints and brushes if you have them.

Natural Dye and Design (SMIX-03)
Students will learn traditional Indian fabric dying techniques to create multiple samples and a cloth tapestry of the student’s design. Students will use natural fabric dyes, binding, resist, and stamping techniques. No prior knowledge of fabric dyeing techniques are necessary.
