lies and sexy dreams
Reception: Friday, July 3, 5-8 p.m.
View in our West Gallery through August 28

Cultural and political institutions impress upon our lives in conscious and unconscious ways. Without often knowing, we tend to mirror and revere the way these influential institutions confine us.  Drawing upon historic and contemporary icons from our collective, daily reality, “lies and sexy dreams” explores cultural  commodification.  It addresses the self as a vessel with incessant indoctrination of ideologies, philosophy and spiritual imaginings and how we expunge and restore. Using a pop iconography, graphic shapes are synthesized into a seamless, cacophonous flow. This is a flow that harnesses a frenzied vigor; an energy that ricochets between what confines and what we try to reach. Featuring a one night only live performance by the artist at the opening on July 3.

A Note from the Gallery Director

Hello LUX Friends!

We have an extra special treat in store for you this coming First Friday.  Not one, but two shows will be opening on July 3.  What a great way to start your holiday weekend and support the Lincoln arts scene!

First up, in our West Gallery, is Omaha-based artist Kim Darling (Kim Reid Kuhn) and her show lies and sexy dreams, in which she examines the idea of cultural commodification by “drawing upon historic and contemporary icons from our collective, daily reality.”  Her work spans a diverse landscape of media and content, from paint on cardboard to ceramic installation and live performance.  Elements of “pop iconography, graphic shapes are synthesized into a seamless, cacophonous flow.”

Kim Darling is an artist, curator, and gallery owner who has been exhibited in several solo and group shows across the country.  She is currently included in the Joslyn Museum’s Art Seen Exhibit, which features the work of some of the best contemporary art that Nebraska has to offer.  She opened the Sweatshop Gallery in 2012, focusing the Benson neighborhood in Omaha into an art hub, and teaches classes and workshops at a multitude of institutions and venues.  Her solo show at the LUX will be as multi-faceted as her career, offering several experiences for eager audiences to explore.

lies and sexy dreams will feature a one-time performance on the night of the opening, certain to be a show you won’t want to miss.

Warmly,

Bri Murphy
