Gil Dickinson is an artist currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland where they study Printmaking and Book Arts at Maryland Institute College of Art. Their love of the natural world was informed by growing up surrounded by Florida wildlife. Subsequently, animals have always been the focus of their work. They create large-scale linocuts, exploring texture and pattern through high-contrast relief prints.
I’m attracted to the patterns, textures, and forms of the natural world. I'm specifically drawn to the wildlife of the American West because of the grittiness of the genre associated with this geography. The pandemic started when I was eighteen and as a result, I haven’t been able to see the scenery I feel so inspired by. My current body of work represents a longing for that adventure, as well as my interest in science and ecology. I love nature’s ability to be uncanny and brutal, while also being rich and beautiful. It feels symbolic of many of the things I’m feeling becoming an adult in a world that feels so uncertain but also full of opportunity.
