Abstract Aztec
Abstract Aztec
Over the past six years I developed this Abstract Aztec painting series, because colonization separated me from my heritage, and I am on a journey to decolonize my life and connect with my ancestors. I am working to help myself and my people overcome our multigenerational trauma by portraying our erased legacy and celebrating our survival. My paintings are studies of Mesoamerican relics, including masks, stone reliefs, and artifacts, and they bridge the past and present through modern interpretations; I depict ancient Aztec gods and people, so their stories continue to live on in modern day, by creating my own narratives and giving characters a new beginning if they suffered a tragic ending. It is also my goal to empower my people by illustrating how our ancestors continue to live in us through our culture and triumphs. I employ a surrealist and expressionist style in my artwork because it allows me to best convey my anger and sadness towards my ancestors’s colonization and my hope for a more prosperous Amerindian future.
