I See Myself in You
Maddie Hinrichs is an artist in residence at the Lux Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska. She received her MFA in 2022 from the University at Albany and was the recipient of the MFA Thesis Award. She received her BFA from the University of Lincoln- Nebraska in 2019. She works with oil painting and embroidery mediums that explore the psychology of interiors. The surreal spaces expedite self-reflection and perception, challenging and conforming to the illusion of paint.
These works explore self-portraiture through reflection, pushing and pulling my silhouette through a series of scenes seen within paintings, photographs, drawings, and prints. The reflections embody trompe l’œil as they flicker between what is real and what is illusion, what is echoed, and what is based in reality. Embroidery and paint, figures and objects, all blend and contrast with one another; at times it can be distinct, and at others recede into the colors surrounding it. Detailed and delicate paint is interrupted by thick controlled swathes of impasto and rough textured threads. Complicated reflections are purposely expansive to create the semblance of deep space that sits on the surface of the work. The spaces are surreal, disparate perspectives forced together around doorways open and closed, offering entrance to new realities. This series is about self-reflection and perception, challenging and conforming to the illusion of paint.
