William Evertson
William Evertson is a Connecticut based artist and printmaker working with large scale woodblock printing, book arts, and sculpture. His work exhibits regionally as well as internationally. He has recently exhibited in the North American Print Biennial and at the Center For Contemporary Printmaking where he will have a solo exhibition this fall. International exhibits have included venues in Japan, Ireland, Denmark, India, Italy, and Australia. Evertson has a BFA from Ithaca College, a MFA from the University of Delaware, and a MALS from Wesleyan University with a printmaking concentration.
Narratives of love, greed, hubris and the fatally flawed cross cultures and time. These stories inform the mythology and folklore that inspire my work—by recognizing repetitive patterns from the past and reinterpreting it in art I aim to give new voice to familiar tales.
I collage and refine these themes and images in Photoshop then transfer my vision to woodcut and relief printing. Carving a block of wood may seem out of sync with the 21st century, but to me all learning requires a slower process than technology allows. Chipping away a wood panel creates an expressive surface rich with accident, blemish, and imperfection. It immediately transcends my starting place; the perfect computer-created ideal and tightens my relationship to the source imagery.
