In my relief prints, I enjoy departing from my accustomed world of digital graphic design. I create images of dark, mechanical creatures and textures as visual metaphors in order to express various ways I might feel about social and political issues, or when events and actions in the world seem to be going awry. Some of the robotic forms are often inspired by boxy 1950s tin robots, while others take on an abstract shape and texture, or are influenced by the anatomy of aquatic creatures. The backgrounds of many of my works include overlapping words and phrases printed on top of each other multiple times using letterpress wood type — creating a “current” of visual noise made up of juxtaposing, illegible layers of information.
