Rich Fowler is a linocut printmaker based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The tactile process of hand carving a linoleum block and then experimenting while printing originally got him captivated by relief printmaking. His work, often known by his studio name Boarding All Rows, can be found in private collections around the US and abroad. He teaches and writes about linocut online and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.
My linoleum prints are made from hand carved blocks and printed on a press in my studio. I’m interested in patterns that catch my eye, like those from nature, geometry, the built environment, and through experimentation while mark making. Color, in addition to patterning, is used to steer my work towards a realm of abstraction. During the print creation process, I leave room for the image to evolve from my initial plan, often in completely unforeseen ways. The anticipation of peeling the paper off the inked block to see how the print is progressing continues to thrill me.
