Male Portrayals
Male Portrayals
Throughout history, artists have depicted men in numerous ways. The depictions were influenced by culture, religion, personal style, artistic goals, and the time period. Some of these representations seem to be contradictory, but they are all authentic depictions of masculinity. To examine male physicality in art let us think about body types and cultures’ choices.
The epitome of an appealing man therefore is what the culture values at the present moment which changes over time and around the globe. The Male Portrayal exhibition has wealthy men, poor men, soldiers, artists, boys, the religious, and poets with various physical appearances. Does physical mien help in analyzing the individual portrayed in art? Possibly, but art is its own value no matter the subject or its depiction. Visit the exhibit, look into the faces of the males portrayed and decide for yourself!
The Male Portrayals exhibition may be seen from January 12, 2023 to May 9, 2023 in the Gladys Lux Print Gallery on the 2rd floor. The exhibition is curated by Susan Soriente, Curator of the Lux Print Collection.
