Artist Statement

I create groups of drawings which pair with a written work, together they investigate the ways that we perceive and create meaning. As an example, below is a much edited version of the writing for “Weird Thirst” which highlights its relevance to this exhibition:

“At night I lay awake… and stare into the plants potted beside my bed until I start to see faces in their leaves… I fold open the blue light of my computer and ask into it a question, and find myself reading about something called pareidolia… a term for the human tendency to seek patterns in random information…

The internet offers the example of a drawing done by a man named Percival Lowell in the early 1900’s, which maps the canals he perceived on mars, believing them to be evidence of life on the red planet. I think about how, in Percivals mind, it was made not only by himself, but much more so by the Martians… After his death this theory would be roundly disproven and attributed to a simple case of pareidolia…

What martians do I have with me? What beyond myself shares the labor of my drawings?
