When One Watches the Other
When One Watches the Other
When One Watches the Other is an exhibition of paintings which depict a narrative of an alien invasion. Rather than being a threat to society, these aliens aim to help humanity by steering us away from harm and towards a better future. Set in the 1990s, this work creates a new timeline where the advance of technology is halted at its peak and questions the idea of technological progress for progress’s sake. This exhibition intends to question standard yet pernicious aspects of our daily lives and work and create a conversation around modern labor rights.

My work encompasses an interest in labor, boredom, and exhaustion. Simultaneously, I am exploring what relief and escapism from these things look like. Escapism acts as the core of my work- what escapism looks like and what creates the need for escapism. I create narrative pieces that are always slightly removed from reality as a way to create intrigue in the mundane. The worlds built to create this work are a combination of my lived experiences and invented characters and stories. I use elements of magical realism to create inquiry around the possibilities of escapism and narrative and reflect on what I view as present-day dystopias and imagine new possibilities.
